Only moments ago we learned that TJ Grant (21-5) would not be taking on Anthony Pettis (17-2) at UFC on Fox 9, with the twenty-nine year old Canadian still not at 100%. We can now confirm that Anthony Pettis will still make the first defence of his newly acquired UFC lightweight title at the December event, with #5 ranked Josh Thomson (20-5 (1nc)) now slated to take on the Milwaukee native. The news was announced on Fox Sports 1 and subsequently confirmed via Twitter.

Pettis became the new UFC lightweight champion last month, when he defeated former champion Benson Henderson (19-3) via submission, due to a first round arm bar, taking home the gold at UFC 164.

Thomson, who’s first UFC run occurred between 2003 and 2004, made a triumphant return to the company in April, when he recorded a second round TKO victory over Nate Diaz (16-9), at the UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Melendez event. The finish not only earned Thomson the ‘Knockout of the Night’ award, but also marked the first time that Diaz had been finished by strikes in his professional career.

UFC on Fox 9 is set to take place on December 14th at the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, California. The lightweight title bout between Pettis and Thomson will serve as the event’s headline bout, with an earlier announced matchup between Urijah Faber (29-6) and Michael McDonald (16-2) filling in as the co-main event.
