While it was looking likely that Alexander Gustafsson (15-2) may get an immediate rematch against light heavyweight champion Jon Jones (19-1) a report from ESPN suggests that the UFC will be going with their original plan after all and that Glover Teixeira (22-2, pictured) will receive the next shot at the champion.
The bout is likely to take place in Newark, New Jersey on February 1st, 2014, the UFC’s super bowl weekend event.
Following the five round classic between Jones and Gustafsson at UFC 165, UFC President Dana White had suggested that an immediate rematch could be possible between the two light heavyweights. However, Dana has now confirmed to ESPN that due to a request from the champion, Teixeira is now once again the next contender and that Gustafsson will fight somebody else in the meantime, in an event based in Sweden. Dana stated;
That’s what the champ wants. We’ll probably have that fight on the Super Bowl card in New Jersey. Around the same time of the Jones-Teixeira fight, Gustafsson will fight in Sweden. I don’t have an official date for that yet.”
Meanwhile, Jones seems set on once again proving his critics wrong, firstly disposing of Teixeira, before setting up a rematch later on down the line with Gustafsson. Jones said,
“I’m going to fight Glover and I will answer all the critics about the Gustafsson fight. I will fight Gustafsson after I fight Glover. I won the fight but I look at it as a blemish on my record because some people think I didn’t. I promise you, he will be next.”
Jon Jones was rushed to the hospital following the bout with Gustafsson, sporting a number of war wounds and with coach Mike Winkeljohn fearing a suspected broken foot. However, an MRI scan revealed no serious damage and Jones will be free to return to training following the end of his sixty day medical suspension, that was handed out to him and Gustafsson by the Ontario Athletics Commission.
Provided Jones defeats Teixeira and Gustafsson beats his yet to be named opponent at the start of next year, a potential rematch would likely be lined up for the third quarter of 2014.
