UFC officials have confirmed that Jon Jones (19-1, pictured) will make the next defence of his light heavyweight title against Glover Teixeira (22-2), with the fight being booked for the super bowl weekend on February 1st, 2014 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Jones successfully made a record sixth straight title defence at UFC 165 last month, when he earned a unanimous decision victory over Swedish challenger, Alexander Gustafsson (15-2).
Meanwhile, Glover Teixeira notched up his nineteenth consecutive victory, including five in the UFC, when he scored a first round knockout over Ryan Bader (15-4) at last month’s UFC Fight Night 28 event, setting up a future shot at the champion.
Also announced for the event is a heavyweight clash between Frank Mir (16-8) and Alistair Overeem (36-13 (1nc)), which was originally scheduled for UFC 167 in November. However, UFC officials have opted to move the bout to the co-main event slot of UFC 169.
The bout is a must win fight for both men, with the duo both having struggled to pick up a win inside the octagon recently. Overeem has suffered two consecutive knockout losses to Antonio Silva (18-5) and Travis Browne (15-1-1) respectively, while Mir is currently on a three-fight losing streak and lost out to the returning Josh Barnett (33-6) in his most recent outing.
