UFC officials have confirmed that Bobby Green (22-5) has been forced out of his bout with Abel Trujillo (11-5, 1nc) at UFC 169, with Jamie Varner (21-8-1, 2nc, pictured) stepping up on a little over four weeks notice to take his place on the card. No reason was given for Green’s withdrawal.
Varner, a former WEC lightweight champion, goes into the bout looking to bounce back from a split decision loss to Gleison Tibau (28-10) in his last outing at UFC 164. Prior to that bout the twenty-nine year old Varner earned a split decision victory over Melvin Guillard (31-12-2, 2nc) at UFC 155.
Varner had been scheduled to take on Pat Healy (31-17, 1nc) at last month’s UFC on FOX 9 event, however, an injury ruled him out of the bout and he was coincidentally replaced by Bobby Green.
Abel Trujillo will be looking to build on his recent victory over Roger Bowling (11-5, 1nc) at UFC on FOX 9, where he earned a second round TKO victory. The bout was a rematch of their earlier meeting which ended in a no contest after Bowling was unable to continue following what was deemed an illegal strike from Trujillo.
