When Kyoji Horiguchi (12-1) was ruled out of his bout with Chris Cariaso (15-5, pictured) earlier today it certainly din’t take long for the UFC to come up with a replacement, with officials just announcing that Danny Martinez (16-4) will step in on two weeks notice to replace Horiguchi.
Martinez competed on TUF 17: earlier this year in the bantamweight division, where he was eliminated by eventual finalist Davey Grant (8-2) in the opening elimination round. Fighting out of the Alliance MMA camp, Martinez will now have a second shot at UFC success when he takes on Chris Cariaso in his official UFC debut. He goes into the bout riding a four-fight winning streak and last competed in December, 2012, prior to appearing on TUF, where he earned a unanimous decision victory over Ian Dela Cuesta (7-5, 2nc). Having primarily competed as a flyweight, where he will make his UFC debut, Martinez has finished eleven of his sixteen career victories inside the time limit, including eight by knockout.
Cariaso, who stands at #9 in the UFC’s official flyweight rankings, will now prepare for his new opponent at UFC 169, where he will hope to build on a knockout victory over Iliarde Santos (27-9-1, 1nc) in his last appearance at UFC Fight Night 29 in October, 2013.
UFC 169 takes place on February 1st, 2014 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. You can check out the updated card below.
