A much-anticipated bout between Chael Sonnen (29-13-1, pictured right) and Wanderlei Silva (35-12-1 (1nc)) may finally be materialising, with the fight currently being discussed for UFC 167.

Chael Sonnen recently appealed to UFC President Dana White to put him in the c0-main event of UFC 167, against Silva, during a recent episode of ‘UFC Tonight’, stating,

“Dana, it is no secret that I am the biggest draw and the highest paid athlete in the UFC, and the only person that comes close to rivalling me is Georges St-Pierre. As I see it, in November, when he takes on Johny Hendricks, live and in Las Vegas, tickets on sale now, he does not have a co-main event. I ask that you put me and Wanderlei Silva on that card. He said last week publicly that he would bet $100,000 on Shogun against me. I came out publicly and accepted that bet, he has yet to pay up. I am asking that $50,000 go to ‘The Higher Heroes Foundation’ headed by Brian Stann and the other $50,000 go to the bombing victims of Boston. I don’t know if he’s a welcher, I believe he will pay up. But either way I ask you, Dana White, my plea to you, please put this fight together.”

Dana White was a recent guest on ‘Fox Sports Live’ where they decided to play Sonnen’s clip to get White’s thought on the matter. Dana said that it’s a fight they are interested in for that card, but it will depend upon when Silva is ready to return to action, with the Brazilian currently recovering from an injury.

“We like that fight, the question is I think that Wanderlei Silva is out until the beginnning of the year. So I’m not sure if he’s healthy, but if he’s healthy I will definitely make that fight and I will definitely make it the co-main event.”

When the announcement was made yesterday that Rory MacDonald would take on Robbie Lawler at UFC 167, we noted it was quite telling that the bout had not been given co-main event status, speculating that the UFC may have something special lined up. Well it would appear we were right and the long-awaited fight between Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva could very well be that special fight.
