It had looked like a bout between Chael Sonnen (29-13-1) and Wanderlei Silva (35-12-1 (1nc)) was finally happening, with UFC President Dana White recently saying he would definitely try to make the bout happen, following a plea from Chael to book the fight for the co-main event of UFC 167.
However, it would seem that the bout has already been cast into doubt with Wanderlei Silva refusing to accept the fight unless he gets PPV points. Dana told MMAFighting via text message,
“[Silva] said he won’t fight him unless he gets PPV [points] so I guess he’s gonna retire.”
Fans will be disappointed that a bout they have been asking for a long time looks like it may be dead in the water all ready. Sonnen has often called himself the top draw in the company and it would appear that Wanderlei is starting to agree with him, given his demand for PPV points is something that the Brazilian fighter has never asked for before.
Of course, with the fight pencilled in for UFC 167, which will also host the welterweight title fight between Georges St-Pierre (24-2) and Johnny Hendricks (15-1), the card will no doubt do very well in terms of PPV buys, with GSP a proven draw in the UFC.
When asked what the UFC would do with Sonnen following the news, Dana replied,
“We will figure it out.”
While this certainly will create a stumbling block in terms of negotiations for the fight, there is still enough time for the parties involved to come to a solution. We’ll look to bring you more news as it breaks.
