After a potential fight between Chael Sonnen (29-13-1) and Wanderlei Silva (35-12-1 (1nc)) apparently fell through, it was a little up in the air as to who might be Sonnen’s next opponent.

However, when speaking at the recent UFC Fight Night 27 post-fight media scrum UFC President Dana White suggested that a bout between Sonnen and Phil Davis (12-1 (1nc)) could be in the works. When asked about Chael’s next fight, Dana said,

“We talked a little bit tonight, He wants to fight on that 20th anniversary card, he wants to co-main that fight.”

In a follow-up question, a rumoured opponent in Phil Davis was proposed, to which Dana replied,

“Calling out Phil Davis? Interesting, that fight could happen.”

Davis himself has been clamouring for a fight with Sonnen, recently offering to take on ‘The American Gangster’ for the country of Brazil, in a recent tweet.

“Enough is enough… I want to fight @sonnench for the whole country of Brazil! Name a time, name a date and bring your face!”

We’ll look to bring you more news on the story as it develops, but with Sonnen currently without an opponent and eager to appear at UFC 167, the UFC’s 20th anniversary show, a bout with Davis is looking as likely as any at this point.

Meanwhile, Dana also confirmed that Wanderlei Silva will not be able to begin training until January, due to an injury, so any future fight’s for ‘The Axe Murderer’ are looking a little way away now.
