At the UFC Fight Night 28 post-fight press conference, the UFC’s Managing Director of International Development, Marshall Zelaznik, revealed that he has spoken to Dana White & Joe Silva and confirmed that Glover Teixeira (22-2, pictured) would face the winner of the light heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones (18-1) and Alexander Gustafsson (15-1) at UFC 165.
UFC President Dana White had previously stated that Teixeira needed an impressive performance to guarantee himself the next shot, with Zelaznik previously saying,
“Dana and Joe have confirmed, with a strong victory by Glover, then he probably gets the winner of the Jon Jones fight. Glover’s got an opportunity to go for that belt with a big win, so we’re expecting big things in Belo Horizonte.”
Well last night, Teixeira produced a ‘Knockout of the Night’ performance in his first-round finish of Ryan Bader (15-4), dropping the American with a right-left combination before quickly following him to the mat to finish him with some technical ground and pound and most certainly coming out with a “strong victory.” At yesterday’s conference Zelaznik was far more definitive and stated,
“Yeh that’s confirmed, Dana’s confirmed it, Joe’s confirmed it. Glover gets the next shot.”
When Teixeira was asked for his own thoughts on whether or not he was ready to take on the champion, the Brazilian was confident in his own abilities, stating,
“Yes definitely. I believe in my knockout power, my submission power and my wrestling.”
Current light heavyweight champion Jon Jones takes on Swedish prospect Alexander Gustafsson later this month in Toronto, at UFC 165, with the fight set to take place on September 21st.
Glover Teixeira would likely square off against the winner in early 2014 depending on any injuries stemming from the UFC 165 bout.
